My Baby’s Eating FOOD and I’m Sharing What I’ve Learned

Well, just like that my little baby’s eating food. And when I say “eating,” I actually mean smearing it all over her face and my kitchen. But it’s all good because watching this little girl eat and learn fills my heart in a way I didn’t know was possible. Even when there ends up being LOTS more laundry. That said, I didn’t just wake up one morning and think to myself – “I think Hazel will start eating food today” – and then walk downstairs and make her a bowl of oatmeal. Not even close!

I had so many questions when it came to starting our food journey and I thought it might be helpful to share everything I figured out so that maybe, just maybe, your journey is a little bit easier.

Tips I Learned For Feeding My Baby Solid Food

First things first, your pediatrician will tell you when your baby is ready to eat food. Don’t listen to anything I say above the advice of your doctor – DUH! Also, there are certain cues your baby will give that will make you know they’re ready. Hazel got to the point where she would practically rip the food out of our hands and try to put it in her mouth. She was ready!

So about 5 days after she turned 6 months old, we were finally ready for her to start eating. Here’s what we did to get ready…

Sleeved Bib // Silicone Suction Plate

There are multiple “programs” or basically different ways to introduce foods to your baby. We liked the idea of her basically eating what we eat and trying lots of different foods and textures, so we went with the “baby-led weaning” plan. So far, we’re really liking it and Hazel loves it too! There aren’t any spoons or purees and you never feed the baby or clean their face. Sound crazy? It’s a little different, but I have friends that did it and their kids are great eaters. The thought behind it is instead of forcing your child to eat, you give them the opportunity to create a relationship with food (and the act of eating food) that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. We read books and also watched an online seminar by SilverSpoon Nutrition.

Then it was time to get the gear! I bought a highchair for my mom’s house and a little chair that clips to the counter for my house. Both work really well!

I also invested in some containers for meal prep, so I could prepare her food the night before. Everything we got has been working out great.

Bento Lunch Box // Pre-Spoons

Oh and just to be clear, milk or formula (in Hazel’s case it’s pumped breast milk because #exclusivelypumping ??) should be your baby’s sole source of nutrition for the first year. But what Brett and I didn’t realize is that not only do you go up a nipple size on your bottle (if you haven’t done this and your baby is 4 months or older, DO IT NOW – you’re welcome), but you actually graduate to bigger bottles! These are the bottles that Hazel uses now and the coolers we’ve been using when we’re on the go.

Soooo, hopefully this was helpful! Feel free to ask me any questions below and I’ll do my best to respond. Did you have a moment when you thought “Finally, my baby’s eating food!” too?! Oh and if you need me, I’ll just be over here trying to get hummus out of my hair. Ha!

  1. Tracy

Can you explain more about going up a nipple size on the bottle and why?

  2. Kristen

BLW will be active in our house next month, that is if she is ready. I would love to see more of the foods Hazel is eating. I can’t wait to get started with my Embry. Have you also read the they need to be sipping on water while they eat?

  3. Vicki Mitchell

Aren’t you afraid of her choking if a large piece of food comes off in her mouth? The pizza and steak made me nervous!

  4. Nicole Laudonia

Hi Jasmine, my daughter is 7 months old (Her name is Ariana) and I’m trying to Led Wean but I’m sooooooo scared she’s going to choke. Dumb I know! We’ve done some foods like sweet potato, avocado, banana, minced beef, hard boiled eggs.. Kids are so stressful haha.
I’ve been admiring you for years watching your show “Hidden Potential” from Australia.
Keep up your fantastic work, I love and enjoy following you. Xx

  5. Karla

Always look forward to these blogs/baby tips!! As for the nipple size, for those that are exclusively breast feeding – you should stay with the newborn size so that the little one doesn’t take to the faster flow from the bottle over the breast!

  6. Selma

My daughter is 4months old and we went up in nipple size but not in the bottle size. Can you talk a bit more as to why you went up in bottle size?

  7. Vicki

I’m intrigued by the concept of baby led weaning (my babies are 24 and 21), but I’m wondering why you don’t wipe their faces? That doesn’t make sense to me. Hazel is adorable!

  8. Mindy

This is great! I wish I had heard of this when my kids were younger. Mine were terrible eaters and I don’t think we helped matters. It totally makes sense that they should explore and put the food that interests them into their mouths. And yes to the making a mess and not wiping their mouths! Wish I’d done it this way!

  9. Kim

I am the same. I am not brave enough for baby led. So my son didn’t start eating what we eat til 12 months

  10. Kate W

Very interested in this! However, my baby goes to daycare and I’m wondering how you “teach” or get your caretaker on board with this method? I worry if they have never done it before that I would be concerned about accidental choking when in their care?

  11. Sharon

How do you prevent Hazel from choking?

  12. Shazeeda

Hi Jasmine, I’m wondering how you got rid of your tummy after Hazel. My baby is 5 months and my tummy is still pretty high, like 5 months high. Any tips or trick I can use. Thank you so much
